Working late nights with colleagues and dining with constituents is nothing new for a legislator; it’s part of the job. But Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen have what most would consider an unorthodox approach to protecting their marriage.
According to the Indianapolis Star, Mike and Karen set some ground rules early on to reduce the chance of infidelity in their relationship. Pence says it’s “building a zone around your marriage.”
Among the rules, if Mike was working late, he was to have only a male assistant with him and when dining alone with female diplomats or legislators, Karen would be present. If there was alcohol at an event, Pence says he doesn’t drink unless his wife is there.
To many people’s surprise, Pence embraces these rules. “If there’s alcohol being served and people are being loose, I want to have the best-looking brunette in the room standing next to me,” he said.
Now, this certainly isn’t customary for most politicians and you may be thinking, “Mike Pence’s wife doesn’t trust him to have dinner or drink with a member of the opposite sex?” But for them, it just works.
Because Pence is a stout conservative Christian, these rules may not be surprising to other Christians. Christian publisher, Michael Hyatt, acknowledged that the practice is “old-fashioned, perhaps even legalistic” but it creates less opportunity for any “black eyes” on him or his family.
The left questioned how realistic these rules were and how this would ever work if he were to become POTUS one day. On the right some acknowledged that it was unorthodox but many applauded their approach.
It may not be something you understand or even agree with for that matter, but how the VP and his wife choose to live their lives is their own prerogative. Besides, this is old news. Pence disclosed this same information in 2002 while he was still a congressman.
Now that Pence has more power and national exposure, everyone has something to say. Why mock a man for protecting his marriage? Why not commend him? One thing is certain, though, you probably won’t find Mike Pence involved in a scandal.
