According to a report from 11Alive:
“It’s been hell,” Schaquana Evita Spears, 30, told WBRZ-TV. “I never could imagine trying to be a good mother would end me up in jail with a criminal record like I’m a predator out to hurt my kids who I live for. That’s my world. Everything revolves around them. Everything I do is for my kids.”
According to The Advocate, Spears admitted she hit her three sons, ages 10, 12, and 13, after she caught them breaking into a home in the 5400 block of Satinwood Drive in Baton Rouge Friday.
Her oldest son told child services officials his mother hit him multiple times with a cord. A report said he had cuts to both of his arms and marks across his leg, shoulder, back and stomach, causing some bleeding.
Authorities arrested Spears and child services took her children away. Winter Applewhite, who owns a bail bonds company used her own funds to bail Spears out of jail after hearing about her situation.
“If I could reunite this woman with her kids, at whatever cost, I was willing to do that,” Applewhite said to WBRZ.
“I really think I was supposed to help her,” Applewhite said. “I wouldn’t have been able to sleep. I think she was an awesome mom. I think what she did what was right. Had it been my boys, I would have whipped them as well and whipped them again when I got out.”
According to an interview with WBRZ, Spears questions her decision:
“I live for my kids,” Spears said. “Maybe I should have did nothing,” Spears said. “I still would have been wrong. I would have been unfit. Then they would have been saying you should have disciplined them. I did it and now look at what happened. The system is messed up.”
While Spears is facing charges, thousands of people have rallied to her defense often citing the fact that the kids would likely have faced far worse in jail or prison.
Even Treasurer of the State of Louisiana John Kennedy has issued a letter calling for Spears’ children to be returned to her.
