Republican Sen. Jeff Flake posted a tweet on Tuesday with an image of a check, written to the Senate hopeful Doug Jones’ campaign for the amount of $100, with a memo line stating, “Country over Party.” Jones, a Democrat, is squaring off against Roy Moore, the GOP candidate who is the focus of a major controversy involving alleged sexual misconduct.
After learning of the Flake’s donation, Jones thanked him for his contribution, saying, “Thanks Jeff. I hope others will donate.”
The battle over the Alabama Senate seat has been particularly fierce, even after Moore was accused of sexual assault and misconduct by several women, which they allege took place while they were teens, one as young as 14 at the time of the incident, and he was in his 30s.
Flake has been a vocal critic of Moore from the beginning as well as highly critical of other GOP leaders who have backed Moore’s run, including President Donald Trump, who fully endorsed Moore on Monday.
As reported by The Hill, Flake stated, “A Roy Moore victory is no victory for the GOP and the nation.”
Flake asserted he would not support Moore prior to the allegations of sexual misconduct coming to light, basing his decision on prior comments Moore made regarding Muslims.
When information about the allegations become available, Flake continued to criticize Moore and stated that it was a “big mistake” for Trump to align himself with the candidate.
Flake has tweeted other statements critical of Moore, including one which read: “After what we know, for Republicans to support Roy Moore over Doug Jones is political tribalism at its worst. We shouldn’t succumb to it.”
On Tuesday, during a lunch with GOP senators, Trump reiterated his support for Moore’s campaign with Flake seated next to him.
Flake has already announced that he will not seek reelection in 2018.
