As previously reported here, 24-year-old Rachael Mattice went missing from her family’s campsite near Wells, NY, on June 22nd after a seemingly innocuous text message to her father.
That night, the 24-year-old had dinner with her parents before leaving to spend some time in a family owned camper in the woods. She sent a text after she arrived, simply saying “I’m at the bottom of the hill. Goodnight and I love you”
After two days with no contact from Rachel, her father went to the campsite to check on her. What he found is every parent’s worst nightmare – the doors to both her car and her camper were wide open, her purse on the ground, but Rachel was nowhere to be found.
Today, nearly two weeks later, Rachel arrived at her mother’s home in Johnstown, some 53 miles from where she went missing.
Hamilton County Sheriff Karl Abrams told local reporters that Rachel was transported to the hospital and “appears to be in good condition.” He would not reveal any information on how or why she went missing.

Authorities were continuing to search for Rachael Lynn Mattice over the holiday weekend, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office said. Mattice left her parents’ home in Johnstown on June 22 for the family’s camp in Wells and has not been seen since. Mohawk Valley Crime Stoppers are teaming up with State Police to try to solve the case. The group is offering a $2,000 reward and promises those with information will remain anonymous.
“We know there’s people out there who are afraid to call the police and want to remain anonymous, or they have information but they’re not sure and they don’t know who to call,” said James Glorioso, executive director of Mohawk Valley Crime Stoppers. Glorioso said the group has received a couple of tips and forwarded them to state troopers.
Rachael is still missing and one of her friends decided to take action and reach out to one of Rachael’s childhood heroes, country music superstar Shania Twain. She made the following post on Facebook:

My name is Cynthia Nellis. I’m from Johnstown in upstate NY. On June 22nd of this year my very best friend Rachael Mattice went missing from her campsite I’m Wells, NY. Today marks one week since her disappearance. The authorities are doing all they can to find my friend. It has been the most heartbreaking week. Her parents are devasted and just want their girl back.
Rachael is the most happiest, caring, giving person who I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. She has a huge heart. She loves animals, hunting, fishing, the outdoors, music (anything from Dolly Parton to the Doobie Brothers), she loves her family more than anything and holds her friends very dear to her heart. She always gives more than she takes and what has happened to her is heartbreaking. Rachael is the most deserving person in the world. And what has happened to her has left us all numb.
I’ve been her friend since kindergarten. She is not only my best friend but my sister. As one of her closest friends it kills me that I cannot fix this for her family. Her family are the most wonderful people and I would change places with Rachael in a heartbeat just so they can have her home.
You are Rachaels favorite country artist. She absolutely adores you. Her parents use to call her Shania when she was little because she would sing your music all the time. She had every tape, cd, knows every lyric to every song. She was heartbroken last year when your concert got cancelled. Going to see you in concert is a dream come true for Rachael.
It’s important to me that we don’t give up hope. That we keep fighting to find our Rachael and to put her back in the arms of her parents.
I’m reaching out to you in hopes that you can make one of Rachaels dreams come true by sending a message out to her. Help us bring her home….and help to bring a little joy to Rachaels life. Even if it’s only for a moment… no one deserves it more than her.
Help make one of Rachaels dreams come true ?
Twain came through and it is through her tweet that hundreds of thousands have learned of this story:
I've heard the story of Rachael Mattice & urge anyone with information to come forward to the police & help her return to her family. (1/2)
