A dozen of Indonesia’s elite troops put on a spectacular performance on Wednesday for General Mattis. During the event, Mattis stood directly in front of the soldiers and was reportedly grinning and enjoying what he was seeing.
The event was an all-out performance. One moment the elite troops were drinking snake blood and the next they were breaking through flaming tiles with their skulls.
Mattis was a big fan of the snake blood portion, according to the Washington Post. The Post reported Mattis clapped and smiled as one elite soldier had poisonous snakes wrapped around him while others had snake blood poured into their mouths.
The unusual welcome didn’t stop there though. Shortly after the snakes were put away, Indonesian Special Forces displayed their counter-terrorism capabilities. After the event, Mattis spoke highly of the Indonesian troops.
“The snakes! Did you see them tire them out and then grab them?” Mattis said after boarding his plane.
“The way they were whipping them around, a snake gets tired very quickly… You could imagine how much training went into each individual there, that they were able to do that… When you watch a force do that, many small things, perfectly, you can imagine that they can also put the bigger things together.”
According to the Daily Caller, Indonesian troops must deal with snakes in the field every day and are taught not to be afraid or them. General Mattis continues his tour this week with a visit to Vietnam. The Vietnamese have a tough act to follow.
