Bueno was in the parking lot of a store, hoping to sell an iPhone 6. ABC is reporting that he’d used the “Offer Up” app to meet the three young women, and had agreed to sell the phone to them the phone for $450.
“He met with them at the front door, he took what I call necessary precautions: doing this during daylight, in a well-populated area in front of the business,” Round Lake Beach Police Chief Michael Scott said in the press conference.
The police say there were 5 teens in the car. The oldest, 18-year-old Courtney Sherman, was a passenger. The people in the car handed over an envelope of cash, but Bueno checked the amount and realized he’d been shorted.
“At that point, when he realized that and that girls realized that he was on to them, they sped away,” Chief Scott noted.
Yet Bueno was leaning into the vehicle when they sped away. He was dragged a short distance before he fell and struck his head on the pavement.
“To realize this has happened over a cell phone and that the people who did were teenage girls,” said Tina Rompala, friend of Bueno’s.
“He was such a good person, he didn’t deserve any of this,” Lily Olmos, said. She is Bueno’s daughter.
“He was there for everything – band concerts, any type of concerts. He took us to prom, he picked us up from prom. He just did everything for us. He never said no. He was always there for all seven of us,” Olmos said.
Bueno leaves behind seven children and four grandchildren. Three of the people in the car, all teen-aged girls, have been charged with reckless homicide and robbery.
