Missy Robertson, one of the stars of the hit television show, Duck Dynasty, wrote a blog post this month after her son, Reed, got engaged and it’s been making head lines. Missy was blunt with her message to her son, who just got engaged to his girlfriend, Brighton, earlier this year:
“Reed, I love you with all my heart, but once you say ‘I do’ this fall, you can’t come home. And Brighton, you’re stuck with him.”
Now, on the surface that seems a bit harsh, but Missy lets us know that she means well and has a positive message behind the declaration. According to her blog post it all started with a similar statement from her father a few days before her own wedding.
He stopped me in the hallway of our house one day during that festive week, took me by the shoulders, faced me head on and stated, “Missy, I need to tell you something very important”, it definitely got my attention. He looked me dead in the eyes and said, “When you get married on Friday, you can’t come home.”
What? Where in the world did this come from? Maybe I didn’t hear him correctly. So, I asked him to clarify.
Again, he said, “You are not welcome to come back to this house to live after Friday night.”
Of course, that’s not too much clarification, so Missy asked again and this is the response she got:
“When you have problems with your husband, and you will, you’ll need to work them out. Your mom and I will be here to help you however we can, but you’ll have to go home to your husband.”
Missy says the advice has been invaluable throughout years of marriage with her husband Jase. She also says she hopes to be the same caliber of mother-in-law as her own.
