As reported by the Daily Mail, Storm is being hailed as a hero after a video emerged of the rescue.
Freeley was walking Storm down the coast when the dog saw something in the water. Storm jumped in and swam up to the fawn, which appeared to be drowning, and grabbed it. The dog placed the baby deer’s neck into its mouth and pulled the struggling animal to shore.
“Storm just plunged into the water and started swimming out to the fawn, grabbed it by the neck, and started swimming to shore,” said Freeley.
Once Storm and the fawn reached solid ground, the golden retriever continued to nudge and pull at the baby deer.
Freeley stated, “[Storm] started nudging it, and started pulling it to make sure he was going to be okay I guess.”
After a few moments, Storm laid down next to the fawn, pushing it in what appeared to be an effort to have the baby deer stand up.
The fawn appeared exhausted.
Once the baby deer was on shore, Freeley contacted a local animal rescue. The arrival of the group scared the fawn, which ran back towards the water.
A second rescue was then underway as a member of the animal rescue team then had to go into the water to bring the baby deer back to safety once more.
After being secured, the fawn was taken to a vet for an examination, where it was found the animal was covered in ticks and had an eye injury.
Once the fawn was rested, it received food and fluids. The baby deer will be released back into the wild once it is old enough to survive on its own.
