To be clear, the video referenced in the title of this post has not been released yet. The Charlotte Police have several videos, and they will eventually be released. Yet more officials and news agencies have seen them, and now news of their content is leaking.
A North Carolina news station has seen them, and is reporting that the video of the Keith Scott clearly shows him holding a gun. This flies in the face of Scott’s angry family, who still insist he was simply reading a book and had no gun.

Charlotte’s Police Chief, Kerr Putney, said Scott exited his vehicle twice with a the gun. He didn’t obey police commands. He didn’t drop his weapon. Police then deemed him to be an imminent threat, and they shot him.
This grainy image is the best evidence of the police narrative so far. From this angle, it looks like a semi-automatic without a magazine.
“I can tell you a weapon was seized, a handgun. I can also tell you, we did not find a book, that has been made reference to,” said Putney. “I can just tell you what I know based on what we’ve gathered through the scientific process of going through the evidence.”
“I’m not going to release the video right now,” he said Thursday. “The family made a request to see it and we’re looking to accommodate that request.”
‘Transparency is in the eye of the beholder,” he said, referencing a pledge to keep things above-board. “If you think I say we should display a victim’s worst day for consumption, that is not the transparency I’m speaking of.”
It may be worth noting that the riots in Charlotte on Tuesday and Wednesday, riots that drove North Carolina’s Governor to call in the National Guard, are focusing entirely on race. Yet the officer who shot Scott, Brentlet Vinson, is African American, as is Charlotte’s Police Chief.
The initial statement from the police said that Scott “posed an imminent deadly threat to the officers, who subsequently fired their weapon striking the subject. The officers immediately requested Medic and began performing CPR.”
At a time when racial tensions in the United States are at a fevered pitch, facts matter. The riots in Charlotte stem from the perception that an unarmed black man was killed becasue of a cop’s racial bias.
If he had a gun, as looks increasingly likely, the legitimacy of the Black Lives Matter protests look even more ludicrous.
