Arcata Community Forest in Arcata, California is a public use forest, however camping and lodging in the forest is illegal. So when a resident discovered a creepy, locked up little cabin, seemingly hidden in plain sight, it was certainly a weird occurrence.
The resident notified the local authorities who came out to check out the cabin.
The cabin was similarly colored to its surroundings and was covered with pieces of trees to further disguise it. The resident who discovered it said it wasn’t even discernible as a house until he was almost in touching distance of it.
The following image is a view of the cabin from 100 feet away. You can barely make out the outline once you know its there.
When local authorities opened the cabin they found an organized little living space, complete with a library, food stores, water supplies, an old typewriter and a to-do list for improving the little building. The dates seemed to indicate that someone had been maintaining the building since 2010.
While cabin itself was pretty weird, what happened next was even weirder. Authorities posted a notice on the cabin ordering whoever built it to remove their things and stop using the building. Well, the mystery person responsible did one better. They completely dismantled the cabin without a trace. A few days later, when authorities returned, all they found in its place was this symbol, the international squatter’s symbol. The area where the cabin had been built looked surprisingly undisturbed and untouched. No one saw the man come or go and there was no sign anyone had driven any machinery or vehicles into the area.
