Customers were surprised when their stop at a Bank of American ATM resulted in more than a cash withdrawal. The technician was stuck behind the machine and used the receipt slot to send out a desperate plea for help, asking the receivers of the notes to contact his boss using the provided phone number.
As reported by Fox News, the unnamed man who became trapped in the ATM room at Bank of America in Corpus Christi, Texas, was a contractor who was sent to change the lock on the machine. He used the receipt slot to give notes to people who stopped to use the ATM, but not everyone took it seriously.
The note read, “Please help. I’m stuck in here and I don’t have my phone. Please call my boss at 210…”
Initially, the people who viewed the note thought it was some kind of joke, but someone eventually decided to contact the authorities.
Police officers came to the scene and discovered the note was quite real.
“[The contractor] left his phone in his truck,” said Corpus Christi Police Officer Richard Olden. “He’s installing a new lock on the door, and he gets locked inside the building where the ATM is.”
The man had few alternatives when it came to requesting assistance, as the bank associated with the ATM was currently closed for repairs.
Olden continued, “We come out here and, sure enough, we can hear a little voice coming from the machine.” He went on to say, “So we are thinking this is a joke. It’s got to be a joke.”
After being trapped in the ATM for around two hours, the man was eventually rescued when his boss made it to the scene. The contractor was not harmed during the incident.
Olden stated, “Everyone is okay, but you will never see this in your life, that somebody was stuck in the ATM, it was just crazy.”
