During the recent presidential debate, Hillary Clinton attacked Donald Trump and said the reason he’s been reluctant to disclose his taxes is because he’s not paying any federal income taxes. The New York Times has just released a report suggesting that Clinton’s assertion is true.
The news, which broke late Saturday, centers on public filings from 1995 in which Trump claimed a $916 Million loss. Clinton immediately jumped on it.

When Trump declared a $916 million loss, he legally avoided paying federal income taxes for years. Just how many years remains unknown.
The news bolsters the Clinton camp’s claims that Trump is hiding something by not releasing his taxes. During the debate, when Clinton insinuated that Trump paid no taxes, Trump–off script–chided: “that makes me smart.”
While it may make Trump a savvy business man, the Clinton campaign is banking on the anger such revelations will cause with voters who do pay their taxes. The revelations may be a way for her to sway undecideds and even pull some of his supporters.
Trump dismisses the revelation as news, and refute the “bombshell” characterization. He says he had a “fiduciary responsibility” as a business owner to pay what he owes. And if he owes nothing, than that is what he should pay.
He went on to attack the Times. The New York Times has endorsed Clinton, and Trump railed against what he characterized as “establishment media.” The mainstream press, Trump quipped, was an extension of Clinton’s campaign.
The report contains detailed tax documents covering Trump’s financial holdings. The paper had the reports analyzed by experts who said the loses would have canceled out as many as 20 years of taxes. If that number is true, it would validate Clinton’s assertions.
The documents obtained by the Times were mailed from New York, and were postmarked from Trump Tower, though they’re not disclosing their sources.
“The only news here is that the more than 20-year-old alleged tax document was illegally obtained, a further demonstration that The New York Times, like establishment media in general, is an extension of the Clinton campaign, the Democratic Party and their global special interests,” Trump said in his statement.
