According to several media sources, a classic country music superstar and one of the original “outlaw country” singers, Merle Haggard, has passed away.
Haggard’s manager confirmed that the singer died at 9:20am Pacific time at his home in California. He was 79 years old.
Haggard was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame in 1997. He continued to play shows well into his 70’s.
He had nearly 40 #1 hits and accumulated virtually every country music award over his long and illustrious career including several Grammy awards.
Fellow country superstar Charlie Daniels summed up everyone’s feelings in an almost immediate tweet:
Country music has suffered one of the greatest losses it will ever experience Rest in peace Merle Haggard
