Alexa is Laughing Randomly and Amazon Has No Clue Why [VIDEO]

Amazon has run into a bit of a conundrum. Alexa is laughing. The laughs aren’t constant, and do appear to be somewhat random, but the best minds at the retail giant aren’t sure why the laughter is occurring. Some users are amused. Others find the laughter “creepy.” Could this be the sign that artificial intelligence is developing a sense of humor?

Amazon thinks the laughter is less insidious. They’re treating it as a glitch, and are attempting to isolate the problem.

“Alexa is designed to respond to commands when prompted with a wake word – which in this case is “Alexa” or “Amazon” – but the laugh was reported to sometimes occur without any interaction with the device,” The Daily Mail writes.

In some instances, the laughter comes when users ask Alexa to perform a simple task.

Other users are reporting something more sinister. The laughter comes at random moments, seemingly unprovoked.

“Lying in bed about to fall asleep when Alexa on my Amazon Echo Dot lets out a very loud and creepy laugh … there’s a good chance I get murdered tonight,” one customer tweeted.

Decades of fiction and film have prepared us for this moment. Humans appear to have a deep-seated fear of autonomous technology. Robots, designed to help the world, end up destroying it. The concept is at least as old as Frankenstein’s monster, but has evolved with our abilities.

In 2001: A Space Odyssey, HAL 9000 slowly develops a mind of its own. As the movie gets more stark and weird, the computer begins refusing the will of its programmer. “I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.”

“We’re aware of this and working to fix it,” an Amazon spokesman told reporters. “In rare circumstances, Alexa can mistakenly hear the phrase ‘Alexa, laugh’.”

“We are changing that phrase to be ‘Alexa, can you laugh?’ which is less likely to have false positives, and we are disabling the short utterance ‘Alexa, laugh’.”

“We are also changing Alexa’s response from simply laughter to ‘Sure, I can laugh’ followed by laughter.”

Will Alexa play along? We’ll see who gets the last laugh.
