President Donald Trump enjoys the strong support he receives from soldiers and sailors who see the Commander-in-Chief as key to rehabilitating an ailing military, but he made some of them very angry on Thursday with his choice of military fashion.

Trump showed up for a speech in Newport News, VA, wearing a Navy flight jacket and an Admiral’s cap. He toured the USS Geralrd R. Ford, a $12.9 billion dollar aircraft carrier and spoke of his intentions to increase defense spending.

But it was his jacket and hat that have captured Americans’ attention. His jacket even had a Commander-in-Chief patch with the president’s name on it. While this is factually accurate, many feel like the flight jacket should only be worn by those who actually fly for the Navy.

Trump tried to diffuse the controversy by saying that the jacket and hat were gifts, and not his choice.

“[They] just gave me this beautiful jacket. They said, ‘Here Mr. President, take this home.’ I said, ‘Let me wear it,'” Trump told the service members during an address aboard the ship. “And then they gave me the beautiful hat, and I said, ‘You know? Maybe I’ll do that.'”

Trump, known for his hats, even managed to irk veterans with his cap. “I have no idea how it looks, but I think it looks good. It’s a great looking hat,” he said. “Just like this is a great looking ship.”

Some of the comments on The Intellectualist are equally entertaining. One reader wrote: “I’m surprised he didn’t wear his purple heart.”

Another called him a “draft dodging creep” and said Trump “walks on the graves of brave men.”

The “PATHETIC IMPOSTER WANABE GENERAL” says one reader. “The only battles he has fought is a bad case of CONSTIPATION!”

Some placed blame where blame belonged. “It makes me cringe but let’s be fair here. The Navy probably gave him these things to curry favor with him. They should be slapped silly, too.”
